Title: Sea level measurements at Bombay High
Description: NIO has successfully carried out sea level measurements at ONGC’s offshore oil production platform, ICP, at Mumbai High. This is the first time such measurements were carried out at an offshore location. The work was carried out by a team consisting of Dr. Antony Joseph, Vijay Kumar, Sundar, and Prakash Mehra after an initial reconnaissance survey carried out by Dr. Unnikrishnan and Dr. Antony Joseph. A suite of instrumentation consisting of self-recording tide gauges and current meter, mounted on a structure of about 350 kg weight and 11.0 m long, was deployed into the ocean and rigidly fixed to the platform. As part of the measurements, an Autonomous Weather Station (AWS) was also installed on top of the platform. Data collected over a period of 40 days (February-April, 2007) were analysed and found to be good. These measurements were used for providing tidal predictions for operational applications for Mumbai High.

Title: Group photo of participants on Shinkai submersible leg 1 cruise in Arabian Sea
Description: Six scientists from the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Goa, on behalf of its parent organization Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) participated recently on the Japanese research vessel RV Yokosuka with its submersible 'Shinkai 6500' for studies at the continental slope off Western India, in the Arabian Sea, between 500 and 2000 m water depth during 29 September - 10 November 2008. Dr. V. Purnachandra, Rao, Ms. Catherine Sumathi, Dr. Anil Pratihary, Mr. Amit Sarkar and Ms. Shahin Badesab dived with the submersible into oxygen minimum depths of the Arabian Sea and made water column and seafloor observations. Dr. Z.A. Ansari collected sea bed samples and photos for understanding benthic life and benthic activity at the Sediment-Water Interface (SWI). This is the first scientific cruise of a collaborative program between CSIR and Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), along the margins of Arabian Sea using submersible. The cruise facilitated 26 submersible observations at the oxygen Minimum Zone (OMZ). The quick results indicate oxygen content of water at the SWI to be as low as 0.02 meuM at about 500 m depth. Abundant and diverse life on the seafloor despite the low oxygen content was observed. Several sea bed sediment samples, 15-40 cm long cores have also been collected for further analysis. Both faunal and DNA analyses are planned on benthic sample collections. The leg 1 participants photo has four NIO's participants: (from left) Dr V Purnachandra Rao, Ms. Shahin Badesab, Mr. Amit Sarkar and Dr Anil K Pratihary.

Title: Electronic Total Station for the RC NIO, Visakhapatnam
Description: This instrument is used for obtaining horizontal angle, vertical angle and laser measured distance (accuracy upto 1 cm) from the instrument station to the object. It can be extensively used for delineation of high tide line, low tide line, coastal boundaries, Bathymetric surveys at inter-tidal zones, etc. The accompanied data processing software downloads all the field data from the memory of the instrument to a PC. The area of the enclosed boundaries, perimeter, etc., can be computed. The software is useful for making contours of entire survey area at desired intervals. This survey instrument "Electronic Total Station" Model GPT-3002 N of TOPCON make is used for delineation of high tide line, low tide line and coastal boundaries, with great precision. It can also be used for bathymetric surveys of inter tidal zones along the coast

Title: Kids interaction with Nobel Laureate Prof Crutzen
Description: The National Institute of Oceanography had organized an interaction program on 30 January 2007 for higher secondary school students of Goa with Professor Paul Crutzen winner of the Nobel Prize for chemistry (1995). Prof. Crutzen is the only Earth Scientist to win this prize, although in chemistry. He is known for his discovery of the mechanism that dictates the formation and destruction of ozone layer in the atmosphere, which protects the life on earth by dangerous ultraviolet radiations. Without this ozone layer life wouldn't have been possible on this planet. Thus his discovery directly contributed to the understanding of the very survival of humankind. Recognizing the importance of his discovery, he was honored with 'Minnie Rosen award for high achievement in service to mankind' by Ross University. In addition to these distinctions, Prof. Crutzen has received over a dozen honorary doctorate degrees by various universities of the world. He has written several books and has published over 350 outstanding scientific papers. Over 300 students participated in this interactive session. Nearly one hundred questions were submitted to him a day before the program by various students. Majority of the questions were about the ozone chemistry, its importance, alternatives, effects of depletion, global warming, impact of human activity etc, clearly indicating the concern of Goan Kids about the future of our environment. Prof. Crutzen replied all such questions in the form of a brief talk on importance of ozone in our atmosphere. He replied several questions raised by the students during open question forum. Ms. Nutan Kamat and Ms. Chandra Kuchadkar of Rosary Higher Secondary School, Dona Paula, and Mr. Yashank Sakhardande of DM's PVSS Kushe Higher secondary School of Assagao were felicitated at his hands for posing three best questions. Dr. Virupaxa Banakar coordinated the program. The Chemistry Teachers Association of Goa collaborated with NIO for conducting this unique program. The students and teachers who attended the program felt that it was a thrilling experience to talk directly to a genius and more programs of such nature should be organized for kids in the future.
